California has built their first satellite to monitor pollution in the state and to contribute to the climate science. Today, Governor Jerry Brown made an announcement in this regard, they have decided to collaborate with satellite imagery purveyor Planet to help in manufacturing a probe that could highlight and tend to minimize the adverse effects of pollution on our environment.
“With science still under attack—we’re under attack by a lot of people, including Donald Trump—and with the climate threat growing, we’re going to launch a satellite—our own damn satellite to figure out where the pollution is and how we’re going to end it,” said Governer Jerry Brown at Global climate action Summit.
The firm Planet had developed hundreds of Satellites in the past few years that will look after and operate the new satellite. The idea is to install it with sensors that can detect and monitor pollution and pollutants, their source of origin and more importantly control them. Presently, the main cause of California pollution is the gas-fueled vehicles on the roads that contribute a lot to the emission of toxic gases.
“These satellite technologies are part of a new era of environmental innovation that is supercharging our ability to solve problems, They won’t cut emissions by themselves, but they will make invisible pollution visible and generate the transparent, actionable, data we need to protect our health, our environment and our economies,” ” said Fred Krupp, president of the Environmental Defense Fund.
However, the climate data gathered by the satellite will be shared with the public in collaboration with Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) whereas the satellite project supported and financed by Overlook International Foundation and the Jeremy and Hannelore Grantham Environmental Trust. More partners are expected to join the satellite project, though, Planet is working on it. No launching date and the estimated amount of project has given so far but until now Planet has proven themselves capable of designing and launching in a short period of time.
