The defense department announced that they are planning to make the U.S military strong by investing $2 Billion in Artificial intelligence (AI) for weaponry. The Pentagon department is committed to spending over the next five years so that they can achieve enhanced equipment, ordered by the military commanders.

On Friday at the 60th-anniversary conference of The director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) talk about the investment on the last day of the conference in Washington. Artificial intelligence is one of the most trendy topics in technology and business firms as they do most of the human work on their own. That’s why the agency sees it very important to introduce new technological solutions to military problems, alongside Trump administration remained very keen to add AI into America’s weaponry in order to compete with Russian and Chinese military forces.

 John Everett, the deputy director of DARPA’s Information Innovation Office, told CNNMoney, “We think it’s a good time to seed the field of AI, We think we can accelerate two decades of progress into five years.”

The DARPA investment is small by Pentagon standards, where the maintenance of F-35 warplanes cost trillions of dollars. But this project is larger than many other AI program previously funded by the department. Google had also been leading Project Maven for the department but after the protest of Google employees who raised their voice against using Google’s software in AI tech as it could prove very destructive, so the company announced its discontinuation on Project maven in July.

“If we get positive results and they’re important, and they’re relevant to the military and national security, we’re not going to stop,” Everett said.

The DARPA investment will focus on creating tech with common sense, contextual awareness, and better energy efficiency. Advancements in technology could help the government to automate security clearances, accredit software systems and make AI systems which can explain themselves.
