Skype eliminating Snapchat like feature to focus on simplicity

Microsoft revealed that as a part of the app update Skype eliminating the Snapchat-like highlight feature and move to simplify the app once again. Last year they introduced the highlight feature which was a clear copy of Snapchat and Instagram stories. Now by reinstating the simplicity and familiarity back, Skype eliminating the highlight feature making other several changes to Skype interface as well.

“This past year we explored some design changes and heard from customers that we overcomplicated some of our core scenarios. Calling became harder to execute and Highlights didn’t resonate with a majority of users. We needed to take a step back and simplify,” said Skype director of design Peter Skillman.

The reason behind the Microsoft approach is to focus on why people still use the services like Audio calls, video calls, and messaging. Skype mobile app is going to be redesigned and removing those features that nobody uses by changing the user interface. While on desktop Microsoft is moving the calls, chats, contact, and notifications to the top left corner of the window providing the rest of the space for navigation.

“We looked at how people use Skype apps, performing extensive testing across global markets and building prototypes to test new concepts, We are listening to your feedback and are wholly committed to improving the Skype experience based on what you are telling us,” said skillman.

Skype radical overhaul did not go well last year and received severe criticism, everybody just seems to hate skype, so Microsoft had spent most of the past year adjusting Skype both on mobile and desktops to make people aware or its Snapchat like features.

Recently, Microsoft even revealed a more mobile-like app for the desktop version but soon the company had to change it because of severe backlash from users. Whereas a number of Skype users still wants the previous original desktop back which has remained in service for many years. Moreover, Microsoft wants to focus on simplifying the app when there is a greater competition like WhatsApp, messenger, Facetime, Line, and IMO beta. Too, it will be difficult for the Microsoft to gain the user’s trust as well.
