Apple has recently buy Silk Labs which is a little-known startup aimed to build on-device machine learning software. This year Apple has remained on AI centric approach, therefore, acquired privacy-centric AI startup Silk Labs, According to the report of The Information.
Back in 2016, Apple released a crowdfunded smart home monitoring camera, this device includes facial and object recognition technology which could detect multiple faces and even pets. Moreover, it could also play music according to your taste and can paired with other gadgets likeSonos speakersand smart light bulbs. But it proved an unsuccessful approach, that’s why Silk labs have developed on-device machine learning services. It could process data without sending it to cloud a method which Apple has preferred.
Silk is not famous in the Technology field, it was co-founded by former Mozilla CTO Andreas Gal. They released only one product at that time which was an intelligent camera and hub for your smart home name Sense. The company website still contains details on services which has on machine vision technology. This includes facial recognition and detection for building surveillance, retail analytics, and home security.
In this regard, Apple has done a similar effort in the development of AI that will separate them from its rival companies like Google. Apple has purchased Silk Labs on a small price, the startup only had a dozen employees and has raised almost $4 million in funding, making this a small purchase on the part of Apple. The company has not commented yet about the deal, But definitely, it gives Apple another opportunity to excel in the AI field.
Apple can use this to modify new smart home products, improving Siri, the HomePod, or whatever they think needs improvement.
