Apple 5G iPhone will arrive in the market in 2020, the wireless carriers are preparing for 5G connectivity of the next generation cellular networking to bring fast downloading speed to users. Apple partnering with Intel to provide 8161 5G modem chip to use in 2020 iPhones. If everything goes as planned Intel will become the sole provider of iPhone modems.
The 8161 modems will use in prototypes and in testing the 5G iPhone, the 8161 will also be forged by using Intel’s 10-nanometer process. Which increases transistor density for more speed and efficiency. On the other hand, Apple said that their customers become unsatisfied with the Intel 8060 modem chip due to some setbacks includes heat dissipation issue.
Many wireless carriers of U.S include Verizon and AT&T will initially need millimeter-wave spectrum to connect the first 5G phones. But the main problem is that millimeter-wave signal requires some heavy lifting from the modem chips, which causes higher thermal levels inside the phone so much that it can feel outside of the phone. This can also affect battery life the heat produced by a device is always converted from the power stored in a battery.
Last year, The FCC gives approval to Apple to test 5G technology. Also, Apple issues with Intel are not that serious which can open the partnership with Qualcomm to provide 5G modems. Some other sources point out Apple is in the talks with another chip maker MediaTek, about potentially supplying the chips.
In 2015, Apple had started working with Intel to supply modems for the iPhones and this year the exclusive line of iPhones was the first to use Intel modems. The starter 5G handset technology will showcase on Mobile World Congress show next February, Andriod phone of Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo will contain 5G modem chips made by Qualcomm.
