Some Android apps downloaded from the Play Store, through hidden advertising banners and videos drain smartphone battery and consume an inconsiderate amount of mobile data.
Scammers are keeping and growing up with the time and their tactics are evolving. These new advertising fraud schemes not only allowing ads to drain battery and user data on Android devices, as well as discouraging lawful advertiser’s revenues.
The system was discovered by the fraud detection company Protected Media, according to which scammers are using new advertising banners, under which they have hidden much more well-paid videos. Even if hidden, the views are recorded and monetized.
In reality, developers are only paid for this kind of banner, while scammers steal the proceeds of video advertising. It’s not the only concern, one developer told BuzzFeed:
“I don’t even think they’re screwing me. All I think about is that they damage the app’s reputation.”
The news comes from the direct experience of Julien, an independent developer who, during his activity, produced and launched a famous audio app that can be downloaded from the Play Store.
Despite the millions of downloads and positive reviews, for some time now it has been used to receive some feeds from users who complain about huge battery consumption and mobile data on Android when the application is active.
However, Julien’s app is not the only one to run into a misleading advertising system that, quite frequently, against will conveys the user to the use of hidden promotional videos. The user without his knowledge finds himself having to deal with the overheating and unbalanced consumption of data and battery.
Not only that, the hidden videos also cause a considerable slowdown in the normal operations performed on smartphones.
The investigation identified one of the companies who are part of the scheme, Aniview. One of company’s spokesmen affirmed to the media that company consists of a self-service and therefore they do not take responsibility in this type of occurrence, even if it is a fraudulent activity.
However, he assured that his team is working to stop the scheme since he was contacted by Protected Media.
If user observe that the application drains too much battery or data, one of the best things to do is contact the developers and let them know. No app creator would want to get a poor repute for his creations.
