Pakistani-Canadian scientist and Inventor of a neuro/bionic chip, Dr. Naweed Syed said that he will start working brain-chip trails on humans in a few months. Just imagine the time when brain ailments can be curable and lost functions could be regained by implanting a semiconductor chip in your brain. Over the past few years, this Pakistani scientist is working on creating a neurochip gained traction at the University of Calgary’s Hotchkiss Brain Institute.
After years of research experiments, design, redesign, and observations a two-way brain chip is almost ready for human trails. This ultra-sensitive, hybrid brain chip would be used first as a diagnostic device for epileptic patients through various approaches that have never been employed before. The main cause of seizures among epileptic patients is the abnormal shooting of brain cells, in order to understand, if we enlarge the picture or our brain we could see numerous electrical sparks traveling from one place to another at almost everywhere in the body.
In between any movement, the upper part of the brain initiate activity while the lower part of the brain fires signals when you are trying to recall any sweet memory. Moreover, these electric signals translate into chemical signals which are the important units to carry out communication in our body and managed by 100 billion specialized cells called neurons.
In the past, in any serious case of epilepsy neurosurgeon carefully removes the brain tissue responsible for abnormal signals. But treating such serious cases is a risky work and also physical access to these sensitive parts could cause other damages too. This surgical strategy sometimes along with the infected tissue removes the healthy one. After the surgery, the symptoms could reemerge within four to five years.
Though, the purpose of creating the hybrid bionic chip is to detect seizures at a resolution never achieved before. Once after implanting the chip in the brain, it would be able to detect seizures and convey these signals wirelessly to a wearable pocket backpack, relieving the patients of a thirty-foot cable which is otherwise a part of the conventional procedure. Another important part of this chip is it will be MR compatible, allowing the surgeon to pinpoint the precise location of the seizures that result in facilitating surgical procedures.
So during the human trials, the chip would alert the patient about the epilepsy attack in advance so that they would remain calm if the person is walking or driving. Too, It can send SMS to emergency services and paramedics by telling them the precise location of the patient through wireless GPS signals while also informing the loved ones.
The Pakistani scientist Syed explains the next step of the chip is not only to detect but also switch to a device that will bring the seizures under control by triggering a pulse of negative electrical current which will counter the spread of positive electrical pulses responsible for seizures. The wireless chip is compatible MR compatible so the healthcare providers could get the precise location of seizures in a 3-D model thus pinpointing the exact location of the tissue causing the abnormal signaling in the brain.
Recently, Pakistani scientist Syed developed two patch clamp chips are designed to test more than 90 different drugs concurrently at the single ion channel level. These channels are responsible for maintaining all functions of a brain cell and are the target of most drugs used to treat brain ailments ranging from mental health, depression, psychosis, etc. This technology will make its way for tailor-made treatment of an individual patient while checking the effectiveness and side effects of drugs.
Before carrying out such an extensive chip procedures Pakistani scientist Syed along with his team conduct a physical examination and neurophysiology tests on various animal models including human cadavers. Anyhow, the human trails will begin in the mid of 2019 at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. If they will succeed in gaining this skill then the coming time would entirely change the current medical procedures.
