Today, Twitter has announced that they are building a Hide reply feature which would let users hide replies to their tweets. The feature was first spotted by a software expert Jane Manchun Wong, the feature would bring a commendable change to how will users control the conversation they create on the platform.
“People who start interesting conversations on Twitter are really important to us, and we want to empower them to make the conversations they start as healthy as possible by giving them some control,” explains Michelle Yasmeen Haq, a senior product manager at the company who discussed the feature publicly on her personal Twitter accountlate this afternoon. “We already see people trying to keep their conversations healthy by using block, mute, and report, but these tools don’t always address the issue. Block and mute only change the experience of the blocker, and report only works for the content that violates our policies.”
Hide reply feature would let users permanently hide replies and it would also make those replies difficult to see in the event the original conversation. Over the years, Twitter has introduced several tools like block, mute and report in order to maintain the standards and policies of the social networking site. Additionally, this new feature would let you tap the “share” icon on Twitter and select “hide Tweet” to close down replies.
Then other users have to click on it to see replies on a tweet instead of seeing them automatically. It also appears to be an option to view all the tweets which you have hidden previously and can manually unhide them if you might consider reopening replies in the future.
“With this feature, the person who started a conversation could choose to hide replies to their tweets. The hidden replies would be viewable by others through a menu option, said Haq, In the coming months, we plan to start testing this publicly,”
In other words, by hiding replies, you could send a hint to your audience the conversation might become long or sidetracked. This would be as same as disabling comments on YouTube, Reddit or on other sites. Hide reply feature might works as in a double way because there are plenty of times when conversations below the tweet get abusive or worse started to involve harassment and other personal attacks.
But at times replying to a tweet is necessary because it is the only way to hold accountable powerful people like politicians and Media. The twitter ratio is very important like when a tweet get more replies than likes and retweets, it is certainly one-way large, the public audience on Twitter can also show critique and dissatisfaction. In some other cases the ratio can be a product of harassment campaigns, targeted tweets, and unrelated criticism which in result makes a bitter experience for a Twitter user.
In this regard, the company had worked on a few features which would make your experience on Twitter less miserable. Like you can mute unwanted words and can customize your notification feed so you only see people follow, and make it so blocked accounts never even show up in search results.
Moreover, in recent years, Twitter proactively hiding sensitive content and also filtered out conversation from the accounts know for using abusive and hateful language. Yesterday, the company banned conspiracy theorist Jacob Wohl because the Trump supporters claim that he was using fake accounts to mislead public for 2020 US elections. It is unclear how this hiding feature will roll out to most Twitter users, it becomes easier to hide replies instead of deleting them or turning off them.
For the time being, Twitter has a limited number of tools in its armory to which it can stop people for being so rude and terrible with eachother online.
