On Saturday, a test version of SpaceX crew dragon capsule which is their new passenger spacecraft. It suffered some kind of failure during an engine test at the company’s landing site in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The incident resulted in the large flames of smoke rising from SpaceX on the Florida coast, according to Florida Today. NASA astronauts are supposed to take their first flight on this new spacecraft in July.
“Earlier today, SpaceX conducted a series of engine tests on a Crew Dragon test vehicle on our test stand at Landing Zone 1 in Cape Canaveral, Florida,” a SpaceX spokesperson said in a statement, “The initial tests completed successfully but the final test resulted in an anomaly on the test stand.”
Anyhow the event is now under control and nobody has got severe injuries told the Air force 45th space wing. SpaceX has been testing the crew dragon to built such vehicle to take NASA astronauts to and from the International Space Station, as part of the space agency’s Commercial Crew Program. Back in March, SpaceX has launched a crew dragon capsule for the first time on company’s Falcon 9 rocket, it sends the spacecraft on a test flight to ISS.
During the SpaceX crew dragon mission, the uncrewed capsule docked with the space station for less than a week, after spending a week it landed in the Atlantic Ocean after using a series of four parachutes. The test flight carried out mainly to demonstrate that crew dragon was capable of doing all major tasks it needed to do. It was a major problem that SpaceX needed to cross before putting people on the vehicle.
From that time, SpaceX had been working on Crew Dragon’s emergency abort system, also the capsule equipped with eight small engines known as Superdracos. It scheduled to test out this system last July. Later the company planned to test the same crew dragon that flew in March which was being tested today.
“Ensuring that our systems meet rigorous safety standards and detecting anomalies like this prior to flight are the main reasons why we test,” SpaceX said in a statement.” “Our teams are investigating and working closely with our NASA partners.”
Now with today’s mishap, it might be possible that the company will change their schedule of other flights, as for the time being they want to investigate the failure which leads to this accident.
