For months now, Microsoft has been working on a new dual-screen Surface device secretly. Also, smaller pocketable devices are under experiment by the company. Microsoft is also working on a slightly larger Surface device, probably it will launch in coming year. Microsoft’s dual-screen Surface will have two 9-inch displays with a 4:3 aspect ratio, as claimed by a a market research firm, IHS Markit. It is expected that the device will be release in the first quarter or first half of 2020, as Citing supply chain info, IHS Markit told Forbes.
Centaurus is the codename given to the device. According to the reports, as part of Microsoft’s new Windows Core OS (WCOS) operating system, and will also run Android apps. Windows Core OS (WCOS) operating system has been developed by Microsoft for a more lightweight version of Windows. Dual-screen devices and Chromebook competitors will be powered by this new OS. Windows Lite is initially being prioritized for dual-screen devices like Centaurus, it is the more simpler version of Windows.
The addition of Android apps is a surprise from Windows for the users. To work without Google Play Services access, company has to convince the developers and also to modify their apps. Microsoft will need to create its own Android app store. The similar position is of Huawei, who is creating an alternative Android app store and it hasn’t been successful for phone makers.
Microsoft’s dual-screen Surface device will use Intel’s latest 10nm processors, and will also have LTE or 5G connectivity, according to the IHS Markit. Microsoft and Intel have been working closely on Surface Centaurus device. OEMs is forced by Intel to work on dual-screen hardware. In the future, these devices will be more like Microsoft’s Courier concept, dual-screen laptops, or even foldable displays.
During an internal employee-only event, the dual-screen Surface device teaser has been given by Microsoft. It indicates that work has been progressed to the stage that it could be shown publicly soon. May be in New York City in October, we might get our first look of this new hardware,as Microsoft likes to hold Surface events.
