WhatsApp has arrived on KaiOS, the OS used by the Nokia 8110

Finally, an official version of WhatsApp has came for the phone operating system which is “KaiOS” used on last year’s feature phones like Nokia 8110 remake. In the starting of the third quarter of this year, it will come preinstalled on selected phones. But for now, this app can be downloaded for KaiOS devices from the KaiStore, having with 256MB or 512MB of RAM. Calling and messaging both will be supported by the KaiOS version of the app. Same as the Android and iOS, it will includes end-to-end encryption.

Over the past year, for these selected KaiOS devices WhatsApp has been gradually released. The app came to JioPhone handsets, last September which runs only on iOS. Accprding to the reports of the Android Authority, back in April, it came to the Nokia 8110, but only in India. It is for the first time today, that it is available in a broader worldwide release. However, now it will be available for atleast seven KaiOS devices. And these seven devices include the Cat B35, Doro 7060, JioPhone (Reliance Jio), JioPhone 2 (Reliance Jio), MTN Smart, Nokia 8110 (HMD Global), and the Orange Sanza.

If you want to get away from modern apps, Nokia 8110 is one kind of phone that you can have in western markets. But obviously, this is not true in all over the world, as in developing countries these phones are more essential, like the Nokia 8110 has 25 days of standby. These are used because of their low-cost, simplicity, and long battery life.

Now, all the users in these developing countries will never cut of with these phones as long as they don’t own a smart phone, as WhatsApp is also a near-essential communications service in these countries. Obviously, it was a deal-breaker for many users for not having WhatsApp even on the Nokia 8110 4G.

However, this operating system is only available in very small number of feature phones, for now. Moreover, KaiOS is a lightweight operating system. After Firefox gave up on the idea of a phone OS, the operating system actually started its life as a fork of Firefox OS. Since the operating system has attracted investment from Google. Earlier this year, voice-typing powered by Google Assistant arrived on the platform.

According to the KaiOS Technologies, it has shipped 100 million devices to around 100 countries. In 2018, including $22 million from Google and TCL Holdings the company has raised about $72 million. In June, Cathay Innovation and French telco Orange announced the latest funding, as part of its approach to boosting internet usage among Africa’s mobile consumers.  The company gets the title of “third leading mobile operating system” after the sale of its 100 million devices, however, its very difficult for the company to reach at the level of iOS and Android.
